BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Las Vegas tragedy is the deadliest shooting in American history.

With over 500 people wounded, the need for blood is critical. People thousands of miles away from Las Vegas are stepping up to help the victims and a local nurse has taken it upon herself to help by hosting a blood drive on Wednesday.

Frannie Nachlas, a registered nurse at the Boca Raton Outpatient Surgical and Laser Center, is teaming up with One Blood to bring out a Big Red Bus to her workplace to collect blood donations.

“I always think, what can I do? I mean, I’m a nurse. I like to help other people,” said Nachlas.

After hearing of the massacre, Nachlas quickly started making phone calls to the Red Cross and local blood centers to see what she could do. She was finally able to get confirmation that One Blood was cleared to send help to Nevada.

“A lot of people think how much can I really do? What’s one pint of blood? Well it’s going to do a lot. It could mean the difference between saving someone’s live, or not,” said Nachlas.

With so many people hurt, hospitals and blood banks in Las Vegas are overwhelmed.

Blood centers across the country are also strapped, thanks to one disaster after another from hurricanes Harvey, Imra, Maria and the Mexico earthquake.

Nachlas and her husband were both runners in the Boston Marathon during the bombing of 2013, so they know how important blood donation is. As a nurse, she says the sheer amount of shooting victims is what prompted her to do something.

“People lose blood very quickly and depending on what’s hit, people can bleed out very quickly. And I can’t even imagine how crazy they’re going in the hospitals there and how it must’ve been,” she said.

It only takes 20 minutes of your time to donate blood. People can donate blood or platelets to One Blood to be sent to Nevada.

Here are the details for the blood drive:

When: Wednesday, October 4

Where: Boca Raton Outpatient Surgery and Laser Center
501 Glades Road, Boca Raton

Time: 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
