Mao Zedong (1893 - 1976), also transliterated as Mao Tse-tung, was a Great Chinese revolutionary, political theorist and communist Leader. The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (or simply the Cultural Revolution) was a violent mass movement in the People's Republic of China that started in 1966 and officially ended with Mao Zedong's death in 1976. In 1958, after China’s first Five-Year Plan, Mao called for "grassroots socialism" in order to accelerate his plans for turning China into a modern industrial state.
